Investigating the Impact of Daily Fantasy Sports Participation on Sports Fandom: A Performative Sport Fandom Perspective

Humphries, Zach J

Abstract Details

2020, PHD, Kent State University, College of Communication and Information.
This dissertation proposal lays the groundwork to investigate the impact of daily fantasy sports (DFS) participation on sports fandom. The study will utilize the Performative Sport Fandom (PSF) theory as a theoretical framework. PSF theory indicates that fans take on individual roles that result in individual fan performances. Instead of relying on less comprehensive theories, PSF theory is used because it takes a nuanced approach at exploring individual fans and how their performances can positively and negatively influence fandom. All DFS players balance multiple identities and fan performances that make them unique. The goal is to better understand how NFL fans who also play DFS perform their fandom. Specifically, DFS players are a vastly understudied fan population and this dissertation will help us see how DFS players perform their fandom, what these performances tell us about societal structures that are currently in place, how DFS players balance multiple and oftentimes competing fan identities, and how DFS as a form of gambling influences fan performances.
