An eTextbook Layout: Developing a Standard Layout for Today’s eTextbook

Abstract Details

2020, MFA, Kent State University, College of Communication and Information / School of Visual Communication Design.
Textbooks are important tools for education to guide and educate. As such they have been purposefully designed to communicate the information in a manner that is easy to translate into knowledge. Today textbooks are being presented on screen. This change in medium, from physical to digital, has changed how the information is presented to the readers. Many publishers are producing digital versions of textbooks, or etextbooks, as a PDF copy of the physical pages. Displaying these pages on screens instead of paper changes the intention of the layout design. That change affects how the information is communicated. This thesis examines what are the core design principles that can be utilized to create stronger digital layouts. Those principles were then implemented and tested in a new layout against a published PDF etextbook. Results revealed that there is potential for redesigned layouts that utilize foundation level design principles. This thesis proposes a list of principles that can form a solid foundation for the redesign of etextbook layouts. It is noted in this paper that this is only the beginning to etextbook research and more exploration is necessary.
