BATTLING AMBIGUITY: A PUBLIC GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE GREAT ¿¿¿¿HOCKEY STICK¿¿¿¿ DEBATE

Abstract Details

2012, BS, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Biological Sciences.
The idea of anthropogenic climate change still remains a controversial topic, at least in the public spectrum. Much of the fault lies in not understanding the hard science, or even the scientific process, which is the keystone in the climate change debate. Branching out from Michael Mann¿¿¿¿s famous 1999 hockey stick graph, this thesis serves to explain the scientific foundation underlying the claims of the climatologists as well as the claims of the skeptics, namely statisticians Steve McIntyre and Ross McKitrick. The beginning serves as a primer to understanding how the science and its process works. By simplifying of the hard scientific evidence and translating it into terms the public can easily understand the debate can be framed in a new way. The debate is then further framed within a new context when looking at the Wegman Report and the Climategate scandal. The players remain relatively the same but the effects are wider and lie within the public realm. In the end, the goal is to more clearly see the bigger picture and perhaps move the public toward their own, informed decisions.
