Mother Ireland and Her Daughters: Irish Women Writers and their Contributions to the Irish Literary Identity

Snyder, Taylor A

Abstract Details

2013, BA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of English.
The presence of women in Irish literature is not often acknowledged, yet women writers are marbled within Ireland's literary identity. From the geography being personified as female to their translations of mythology and folklore, women have developed a defined presence in Irish history and literature. These creative works, consisting of novels, plays, and poetry collection, help to sculpt the identity of Irish women writers in a canon that has been almost exclusively patriarchal in nature. The recent reexaminations of the works of two women -Emily Lawless and Augusta Gregory -have played important roles in the establishment of a distinct female identity in the Irish literary canon.
