The Influence of Fairy Tales on the Works of Edgar Allan Poe

Braccia, Nicole Cathryn

Abstract Details

2013, BA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of English.
The works of Edgar Allan Poe were written using elements common to the Gothic writing style. The original fairy tales, such as the ones written by Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Andersen, E.T.A. Hoffman, and the Grimm brothers were written using these same elements in order to express these same themes presented in Poe's works. It can be argued that Poe was influenced by the tales because according to Harold Bloom's theory, writers are heavily influenced by their predecessors. Poe's life experiences mirrored the events that take place in some of the fairy tales and also contribute to the themes of his works and the way which they were written.
