Infrared Thermography to Evaluate Guastavino Vaulting at the West Side Market

Guastavino vaulting was an important structural, fire proof, and aesthetic technique of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Preservation of these vaults calls for an economical and efficient method of assessing their condition. Infrared thermography is a promising technique because of its ability to detect voids and construction variations remotely and over a large area. Applying infrared thermography to the Guastavino vaults found in the historic West Side Market in Cleveland, Ohio, demonstrates the utility of infrared thermography in identifying anomalies in the vaulting. This identification can quickly direct engineers to areas of potential problems in the vault, significantly reducing the expense of tile by tile sounding to evaluate the vaults.
