Abstract
The project is an analysis of gender and sexuality in three works of speculative fiction, Ursuline K. LeGuin's "The Left Hand of Darkness", Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale", and Marge Piercy's "Woman on the Edge of Time". By analyzing the various cultures and societies that appear in each work and comparing and contrasting them to real world social structures, the reader can draw conclusions about what each work may imply about the real world. The overarching idea is that gender and sexuality in humans are fluid constructs influenced most strongly by society and cultural rules rather than by biology. The comparison between the incredible and the real throws reality into a new light, allowing audiences to see their own lives and surroundings from a different angle and reach conclusions about the world they might not otherwise contemplate.
