The Effects of Partner Support on Maternal Control Behaviors of Latina Adolescent Mothers

Adolescent mothers and their children are at high risk for poor developmental outcomes. Various forms of partner support have the potential to lessen maternal use of negative parenting behaviors. This study examined multiple forms of partner support in relation to observed maternal negative control behaviors in a longitudinal study of toddlers and Latina adolescent mothers who were in a romantic relationships with a partner (N= 106). Mothers were interviewed when their children were 18 months and observed interacting with their children at 24 months (clean-up task). Perceived partner support was examined as emotional support, partner engagement in child care, and mother co-residence with partner. Both residence with the partner and partner engagement in child care were significantly correlated with the use of less negative control behaviors. A regression analysis indicated that partner engagement in child care when the children were 18 months old was uniquely related to the mothers use of less negative control at 24 months. These findings suggest the importance of further examining the potential benefits of partner involvement for the quality of adolescent mothers' parenting behaviors.
