The Raspberry Pi Embedded Linux Computer as an Alternative Controller for Remote Access Laboratories

Marvin, Michael Dennis

Abstract Details

2014, BS, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Physics.
Distance learning is an increasing trend at universities around the world. The Kent State University Department of Physics offers laboratory courses entirely online where students connect to a computer hosted on campus to control physical laboratory hardware. The current implementation of the control scheme, while functional, has many disadvantages, including concerns about security. An alternative method of control is proposed using a Raspberry Pi embedded Linux computer as the host computer. This proposed method solves many of problems with the current method, including the security concerns, while costing less to implement and maintain. To verify the success of this method, an example laboratory is created where students control a pulsed laser to perform a rangefinding experiment.
