Designing the Airstream: The Cultural History of Compact Space, ca. 1920 to the 1960s

Abstract Details

2014, BA, Kent State University, College of Architecture and Environmental Design.
Upon researching the recreational travel industry, and diagraming floor plans of popular manufacturers, it became apparent that one stood out over the others for the multi-use of space, along with still having style in design. That was the Airstream. Taking into account the history that led up to the design of the Airstream, while utilizing a project that was given to us in studio, in which we diagramed sound, I began to see the data visualization of that information come to life. That data visualization is what led me to study, not only the history and design of the Airstream, but the influence that the artists of the time, and how they were diagraming space in which to look at in an entirely different way. The end result of my research led to a better understanding of an iconic design that can be applied to any product.
