Szuret: Translating Magda Szabo

Abstract Details

2014, BA, Kent State University, College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Ambassador Crawford / Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship.
In late November 2007, Hungary lost Magda Szabo', one of the nation’s most cherished writers. In her lifetime, Szabo' received many awards and honors, and is still Hungary’s most-translated writer. In an obituary for The Independent, Len Rix, who translated into English her most famous work, Az Ajto' [The Door], wrote, “Szabo' was a supreme example of the embattled writer. Her devotion to her craft was passionate and lifelong. Fittingly, she died at four in the afternoon, shortly after her 90th birthday, with a book in her hand” (Rix, 2007). Though her fiction is widely translated, her first two published works, collections of poems, have never been translated into English. And what poems do exist in English make up a jumble of online poetic expressions with little attention to the craft over which Szabo', no doubt, labored. For my Honors thesis at Kent State University, I chose to translate a selection of Szabo'’s collected poems, Szu¨ret [Harvest].
