Abstract Details

Using a design project to update Portugal’s Feira Popular (People’s Fair, Lisbon), this honors thesis tests linkages between the political, social, economic and cultural environment surrounding the inauguration of the People’s Fair in 1943, with similar conditions that have developed between the fair’s closure in 2003 and today. The design project is based on research of Portugal’s political, economic and social climate in 1943, and the influence of this climate on the fair’s inauguration as an entertainment venue in the city of Lisbon. It also contextualizes the fair’s site within the physical evolution of Lisbon. It discovers similarities between the socioeconomic climates of Portugal in 1943 and 2015 and it evaluates ways the fair could be revived to fulfill the people’s current needs and preferences. Finally, it analyzes three relevant precedents to generate ideas for the design proposal. The research methodology is based on the analysis of different sources including historic newspaper articles, current demographic and economic statistical data, figure ground studies, maps and scholarly books and articles. The research findings have led to the development of a master plan and schematic design for the site including housing, a culture center, fair attractions, restaurants/market and a midway.
