THE FAILED CRUSADE: THE KU KLUX KLAN AND PUBLIC EDUCATION REFORM IN THE 1920s

Slonaker, Randall Scott

Abstract Details

2016, BA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of History.
This thesis concerns questions pertaining to the philosophy and actions of the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s, who unlike its nineteenth century predecessor and post-World War Two counterpart was not as much a vigilante order, but rather a well organized political organization intent on pursuing social reform through the vehicle of public education. This study answers such questions by analyzing the case study of the Klan's takeover of the school board of Akron, Ohio and comparing it to concurrent actions taken by the Klan throughout the U.S. and Canada. This analysis not only sheds light on the Klan of the 1920s, but also on broader questions concerning mainstream, American attitudes toward immigration, education, religion and separation of church and state.
