Prior research has demonstrated that having a chronic illness can be a stressor, and that higher stress is associated with poorer treatment adherence in a variety of chronic illnesses. We extended the literature by examining the relationship between stress and adherence to treatment, and stress and responsibility for treatment in a group of adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD). Additionally, we also examine stress’s relationship with adherence and responsibility to routine daily activities (i.e. homework and chores) for adolescents with SCD and a control group of similar age and race. To explore these relationships, 16 adolescents with SCD were recruited from a local hospital. An additional 16 healthy adolescents were recruited from an inner-city charter school to serve as the control group. All participants completed questionnaires on stress, and adherence and responsibility for routine daily activities. Participants with SCD also reported adherence and responsibility for SCD treatment. We found a negative correlation between stress and responsibility for routine daily activities. The relationships between stress and adherence to routine daily activities, stress and adherence to treatment (in the SCD group) and stress and responsibility for treatment (in the SCD group) were not significant. T-tests revealed there were no significant differences between the two groups on stress, adherence to routine daily activities, or responsibility for these activities. Regressions showed that stress predicted responsibility for routine daily activities in both groups, but did not predict adherence to routine daily activities in either group, adherence to SCD treatment, or responsibility for SCD treatment.
