Flow: Abstracting Mundane Environments

Abstract Details

2016, BA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.
Flow: Abstracting Mundane Environments is a series of paintings created between spring 2015 and summer 2016. The series began from a contemplation of the psychological experience of flow. Flow is the complete absorption in what one is doing. When in flow an individual will feel completely involved in what they are doing, have a sense of timelessness, achieve greater inner clarity, and experience a sense of ecstasy and serenity. The paintings created are all derived from sketches of environments experienced throughout the past year and executed in a style responding to the concept of flow. This paper highlights the insights and inspirations for the body of work, presents the steps the work was completed and realized, gives explanation to the difficulty of finding inspiration for the honor’s thesis while still being true to oneself, discusses the difficulty of the present art environment outside of major cities, and lastly proclaims the plans for the artist moving forward.
