Approaching Alzheimer's Disease through Non-Pharmacological Interventions

Abstract Details

2017, BS, Kent State University, College of Education, Health and Human Services / School of Lifespan Development and Educational Sciences.
This critical analysis reviews much of the outstanding literature related to Alzheimer’s disease and care practices. The aims of this critical analysis resulted from four main points of discussion. The first is defining Alzheimer’s disease through the discussion of symptoms, and prevalence. Secondly, this review will emphasize the importance of caregivers, and the burdens that both formal and informal caregivers face while caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s disease. Thirdly, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological care practices will be discussed and this review will argue that not only are non-pharmacological interventions more beneficial, but also safer. Lastly, this review encourages that non-pharmacological interventions be taught not only to formal caregivers, but informal caregivers as well, and that these practices be more frequently implemented in informal settings. In order to accomplish these goals, this analysis suggests an adjustment to government healthcare spending to provide better education to informal caregivers to better equip them to care for a growing population with Alzheimer’s disease.
