Representing Diversity in the Arts Through Interaction Design

Scharlott, William C

Abstract Details

2017, BFA, Kent State University, College of Communication and Information / School of Visual Communication Design.
The purpose of this project is to design six sculptures that represent the racial demographics in five creative fields. Each sculpture will have a different form – influenced by the methods and tools used in that respective field. Color, materiality, texture, tone, location and levels of interactivity of each sculpture will be different and informed by the field. The sculptures will display a visual representation of proportionate racial data to teach viewers what ethnicities make up each of these industries. Displaying this information will emphasize the importance of inclusivity and commitment to diversity. The visualization of contrasted majority and minority will promote the beauty of difference, variation and anomaly. The sculptures will be free-standing, public and open– similar to The Picasso (Untitled Sculpture) or Cloud Gate – both in Chicago, Illinois.
