Biogeographic History of the Mulatta-Group Macaques as Inferred from Mitochondrial and Y-Chromosomal Molecular Markers

The biological history of the macaque clade is one of particular importance in medical research. Macaques are a closely related group of monkeys that inhabit Asia and parts of northern Africa. This study particularly focuses on the history and migration of macaque species to the islands of Japan and Taiwan. I anticipated that due to female philopatry within the clade that the mitochondrial lineages on the islands would be deeper in evolutionary time than the Y-chromosomal DNA. I used exonic sequences from the genes PRKY, XKR3, ZFY, TSPY, and SRY for the Y-chromosomal analysis, totaling about 5.4 kb. A 1.5 kb region of the mitochondria was pulled from GenBank and included the 12S ribosomal, tRNA val, and 16S ribosomal genes. Due to the use of exonic sequeces, the analysis did not provide much resolution to the current understanding of macaque migration to the islands. However, future studies using intronic sequences are hypothesized to illuminate differences between the macaque female lineages migration to the islands and males.
