To Earn One's Salt

Abstract Details

2018, BA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of History.
This project includes both a novel and an explanatory essay. In the novel, To Earn One's Salt, James' life gets turned upside-down when he accidentally stows away on a vessel bound from Charleston to the Caribbean in the early 1700s. Little does he realize that nothing aboard the Deliverance is as it appears to be, as he learns the ropes in an attempt to earn his place among the crew, and to prove his worth to the stern Captain Clancy and the even harsher mates. This plot fits well with the goal of displaying daily life aboard a merchant brig and some of the less-considered aspects of seafaring life. Throughout the work, historical accuracy has been striven for, although for some of the details that have strayed towards the edge of believability, an explanatory essay follows the novel in which these issues are addressed along with a bibliography of the sources used while researching for this project.
