ANALYSIS OF MICROWEAR ON FLAKES USED TO BUTCHER UNFROZEN AND FROZEN MEAT

Microwear is the use of microscopy on stone tools to determine the raw material they were used on during their life. Although there have been a variety of experiments produced to determine the differences in microwear left by different materials, only one of these previous experiments has a flake used on frozen meat been assessed or microwear traces (Keeley & Newcomer 1977: 55). This study analyzed and compared differences between the microwear on flakes used on frozen meat versus used on raw meat. The environment during the Pleistocene, and other cold periods, would mean that meat from a fresh kill would only have a short period of time before it would start to freeze. Early people in higher latitudes also hunted and scavenged animals before the invention of fire, meaning the meat would freeze before total consumption. This experiment determined that there is a clear difference in the microwear on tools used to butcher frozen and unfrozen meat. This information can help provide more evidence and insight on past groups' hunting and meat processing behaviors.
