Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common hospital acquired infections (HAIs), accounting for more than 30% of HAIs (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). Seventy-five percent of hospital acquired urinary tract infections are thought to be catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). However, there are numerous characteristics or circumstances that put patients at risk for the development of a UTI. Common risk factors include, but are not limited to, sexual intercourse, diabetes, poor personal hygiene, changes in the vaginal flora, pregnancy, menopause, suppressed immune system, immobility, spermicide use, tampons use, heavy use of antibiotics, age, kidney stones, and prostate enlargement (McIntosh, 2017). Additionally, urinary incontinence is a common risk factor for the development of a UTI, one in which the most common nursing intervention is urinary catheterization. In this section, the author will delineate the need to diagnosis and understand the prevalence of UTIs in the gerontological population of long-term care (LTC) facilities. A proposed protocol will be briefly outlined.
