YOU HAVE TO GO TO KNOW- PEOPLE ARE THE WAY THEY ARE FOR A REASON

Gray, Mariah Elizabeth

Abstract Details

2018, BS, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Biological Sciences.
The purpose of my thesis is to describe and discuss global health in the context of my experiences in India and Ethiopia--using autoethnography and narrative inquiry to tell my personal stories and development. I explore the barriers that exist that create inadequacies to quality health of medically underserved populations, even in the midst of medical aid. Access and availability, culture and lacking education are some examples of barriers that are ever-present across our world. I focus on the disparities I observed while abroad, and reflect to describe how they have changed my views at home. During the summer of 2017, I spent three weeks in Asia--and in the summer of 2018, I spent two weeks in Africa. This autoethnography tells my experiences in a cross-cultural examination and reflects on my developing views of cultural competency as a pre-medical student and future physician.
