The Effects of Color on Visual Perception and Visual Clutter

Abstract Details

2019, BA, Kent State University, College of Architecture and Environmental Design.
As design becomes more intentional in creating spaces that encourage productivity, satisfaction, and positive mood, it is imperative that the use and amount of visual stimuli within a space is carefully considered and intentionally created. This honors thesis research seeks to understand the effects of color on visual clutter perception and the emotion and behavior of users in interior spaces and answer the question: At what point is a stimulus in a space considered overload and is no longer pleasing to the user? The goal of this research is to recognize the aspects of visual clutter in relationship to color and perception that have been studied, describe relationships found, and then provide reasoning supporting the need for further research. Interior environments affect our personal and professional lives and impact our mood and ability to perform tasks. While many aspects go into these spaces as a whole, visual stimuli, and specifically the amount of it used, is an essential piece that should be studied to achieve a successful design.
