This study attempts to describe the action of a school shooter with the models used to describe suicidal behavior. The suicide model used to compare, integrated a stress-diathesis model and an interpersonal theory of suicidal behavior. The stress-diathesis model describes an interaction between risk factors that predisposes an individual for suicide (diatheses) and a precipitating event that triggers suicide (stress). While the interpersonal theory for suicidal behavior uses three components to describe suicide: thwarted belongingness (feeling alienated), perceived burdensomeness (feeling life is a burden to others), and capability for suicide (repeated exposure to adverse events desensitizes to death). I created a model that identifies the following factors as diatheses: media sensationalization, school size, gender roles, mental illness, development, premeditation, and capability for homicide. I identified the following factors as stressors: bullying, thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness. To test this model, I completed a systematic review of the literature on school shooters. I identified 38 articles to include in the systematic review and organized them into three different categories: societal factors, individual factors and social factors. I then summarized these articles and found whether they contributed to the model. I found that the following diatheses are consistent with the literature: mental illness, premeditation, and capability for homicide. I found that the following stressors are consistent with the literature: bullying and thwarted belongingness.
