INTERVENTIONAL METHODOLOGIES FOR AMERICAN MILITARY VETERANS WITH PTSD AND COMORBID DISORDERS A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract Details

ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to identify the existing interventional methods currently being employed by mental health professionals in a multitude of settings, from private mental health practices to Veterans Affairs clinics and other facilities. Numerous studies exist in the interventional methods used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. For the purposes of this review, PTSD was limited in scope to military veterans that have been diagnosed with the disorder, as well as interventional techniques to treat it by itself, or with comorbid disorders, those disorders that occur in conjunction with PTSD. The studies that have been conducted over the past few decades indicate that there are already in place effective, evidence-based treatments for PTSD; however, when those interventions are being conducted on comorbid disorders, such as alcohol use disorder, then there exists a limited degree of effectiveness. Another component of the mental health issues that arise from a diagnosis of PTSD is the rates of suicide, which for American military veterans has continued to increase over the past decades and has been shown to be correlated with PTSD diagnoses. Military veterans from American conflicts continue to commit suicide in larger numbers than their civilian counterparts, due in part to the severity of PTSD symptoms that continue to manifest throughout the lifetime of the disorder. To improve on the quality of life for those diagnosed, different interventions have been employed to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD, and newer versions are being adapted to the ever-changing range of comorbidities of PTSD. As of this writing, the most effective interventional techniques being employed to treat PTSD are cognitive processing theory, prolonged exposure, and group dynamic therapy. Newer methods are currently being investigated, such as trauma management therapy, which looks to combine the most effective techniques from various interventions into one cohesive therapeutic style. The data from this study has shown promise and could potentially be as effective as the other interventions mentioned.
