PREDICTING TREATMENT OUTCOMES IN A BATTERERS' INTERVENTION PROGRAM WITH THE MMPI-2-RF

Abstract Details

Within the last few decades, the United States' justice system started playing a role in the treatment of offenders and the security of victims through intervention programs that are aimed to lower the rates of domestic violence (Sellbom et al., 2008). Given that prior research has revealed inconsistent findings regarding the success of batterer intervention programs, it is important for researchers to identify predictors of successful outcomes for these interventions. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008/2011) includes broad and narrow band measures of psychopathology and personality that can provide additional insight into this population. The current study reports correlations and relative risk ratios to help determine which MMPI-2-RF scales predict increased risk of poor outcomes. Results identified elevations on several MMPI-2-RF scales that are associated with increased risk for treatment failure and recidivism. These findings indicate that the MMPI-2-RF can provide useful information for identifying offenders at risk of not completing a batterers intervention program and/or reoffending.
