Using the MMPI-2-RF to Characterize Intervention in lieu of Conviction Evaluees

Abstract Details

2020, BS, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Psychological Sciences.
A scarce amount of research has been done examining the Intervention in lieu of Conviction (IILC) population from a psychological perspective. Such research is important to help develop better drug court treatment programs and to aide clinicians evaluating defendants in this population. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008/2011) has been used to characterize other forensic populations and can provide useful information in forensic evaluations. The current study further describes and characterizes the (IILC) population by providing mean T-scores and standard deviations on all MMPI-2-RF Validity and Substantive scales from a sample of 359 individuals evaluated at a court clinic in Akron, OH for IILC. I also provide comparisons of mean T-scores between the IILC sample and a sample of other pre-trial defendants. On the Validity Scales, results show higher scores on the over-reporting scales in the pre-trial comparison group than the IILC group. On the Substantive Scales, the IILC sample scored higher on the Substance Abuse (SUB) scale, and the pre-trial comparison sample scored higher on three scales reflecting thought dysfunction. These results are in line with extent literature on this population (Mattson et. al., 2012; O’Reilly, 2007), as well as past research using the MMPI-2-RF in other forensic evaluations (Sellbom, 2017). Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.
