Organic Synthesis of Kaurenoic Acid

Abstract Details

2020, BS, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Stevioside is a natural product isolated from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana. Due to its similar chemical structure, it is easily used as a starting material for the synthesis of kaurenoic acid. Kaurenoic acid, a natural product itself, can act as a parent molecule for the future synthesis of related diterpene derivatives, such as platensimycin and rhodojaponin VI. With the rising need for new antibiotics and non-opioid pain-relief compounds, these future diterpenes contain the potential to fulfill this growing need. The innovative synthesis of kaurenoic acid methyl ester from stevioside contains nine synthetic steps and now provides access to these important derivatives. Future work will focus on improving selectivity for the exocyclic alkene of kaurenoic acid, while optimizing the final reaction for overall yield.
