Childhood maltreatment, defined as child physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect, occurs at an alarmingly high rates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 7 children experience abuse or neglect each year. Experiences of childhood maltreatment can lead to a wide range of enduring negative mental and physical health outcomes including substance use disorders. A wealth of literature supports the relationship between childhood maltreatment and later substance abuse; however, most research focuses on the impact of physical and sexual abuse without assessing neglect. Although the negative outcomes of abuse have received significant research attention, the often-chronic nature of neglect may lead to more deleterious long-term consequences than other forms of maltreatment. More research is needed investigating whether differing profiles of childhood trauma are differentially associated with substance use. Among individuals with SUD, it is unknown whether specific types of childhood maltreatment (i.e. physical abuse vs. emotional neglect) differently impact SUD severity. The present study examined the relationship between different types of childhood maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect) and current substance use disorder symptom severity in an adult sample of substance users undergoing medication-assisted detoxification recruited from a detoxification facility.
