Abstract Details

2015, Master of Arts, Marietta College, Psychology.
It is estimated that 24 million people within the United States suffer from eating disorders. Several studies have been done in an attempt to better understand the nature of eating disorders and the nutritional consequences. The current study assessed the relationship that exists between eating attitudes and behaviors, exercise, artificial sweetener use, and nutritional intake. Ninety-four college aged participants completed the Eating Attitudes Test- 26 and a Food Choice Questionnaire. Participants then recorded their daily nutritional intake and exercise on three days randomly assigned. Multiple regression analyses showed that EAT-26 scores, use of artificial sweeteners and fat-free foods, and cardio exercise had significant effects on nutritional content, including calories, total fat, carbohydrates, protein, saturated fat, sodium, potassium, and sugar. Additionally, men were found to eat significantly more calories, total fat, carbohydrates, protein, saturated fat, sodium, potassium, and sugar than women. No significant differences were found between men and women for EAT-26 scores.
