Abstract
Previous research has shown that parental strategies are effective at reducing the risks involved in using different media types. Overall, these strategies have been split in two categories; active and restrictive. Active mediation includes monitoring, supervision and co-use, and interpretative mediation Restrictive mediation includes interaction restrictions, technical mediation, and access restrictions. The research looking at social media use is limited but generally active has been shown to be effective at reducing risks involving social media and restrictive has been found to be adaptive and maladaptive. Alt and Boniel-Nissim (2018) have suggested that Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) is the vehicle for those findings in that parental mediation reduces FoMO and in turn reduces problematic internet use. The current study set out to help validate the model of FoMO as a mediator and to investigate the effectiveness of the strategies of parental mediation on adolescents and their social media use. It did this through collecting self-report data from middle school students about their perceived parental mediation and their own problematic internet use. A regression analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis. The study failed to find that active mediation predicts lower problematic internet use. It did find that restrictive parental mediation did predict lower levels of problematic internet use. FoMO was not found to be a mediator in the above finding. Limitations and implications are discussed as well as ideas for future research.
