Applying and Evaluating the Two Zone Mathematical Exposure Model in a Paper Coating Operation

The Two Zone Mathematical Exposure Model was applied and critically evaluated using a paper coating operation. Near Field Zone point estimate and TWA predicted airborne Xylene concentrations were compared with observed airborne Xylene concentrations from FTIR measurements. A matched pair t-test was conducted to determine if the difference between predicted and observed values differed significantly from zero. The t-test was not significant, (p = 0.17) indicating the predicted values did not differ from the observed values. The model performed well in predicting the “true” airborne concentrations according to this statistical measure. The model was also evaluated using a predefined exposure category framework in which concentrations were expressed as a ratio of the OSHA PEL. Both Two Zone predicted TWA airborne Xylene concentrations and observed (FTIR) TWA Xylene concentrations fell within category 3, concentrations >50-100% of the PEL.
