An Abstract of A Higher Education Site’s Environmental Noise Impacting the Neighborhood By Timothy J. Hagood Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Science Degree in Occupational Health The University of Toledo May 2014 This study investigated whether noise from a Higher Education site has a harmful effect on local neighborhoods. The sources of noise were evaluated to determine whether the noise levels may cause an overexposure and create adverse health effects on the residents. The study focused specifically on the noise levels generated from HVAC equipment including a cooling tower, generators, rotating machinery and other mechanical sources at the Higher Education site. The findings indicated significant variations in noise levels dependent on the monitoring location and time. The results suggested a lack of compliance with the city’s noise ordinances and possible excessive noise exposure in the neighborhood’s residents.
