Fuentes Bíblicas e Intencionalidad Política en la Oratoria de José Martí

Bennett, Justin Bradford

Abstract Details

2003, Master of Arts, Miami University, Spanish.
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how José Martí incorporates in his oratory similar themes, images, metaphors and rhetorical strategies present in the oratory of Jesus Christ, as documented in the Gospels of the New Testament of the Bible. This use creates a parallel relationship between God/Jesus Christ/the people of God and Cuba/José Martí/the people of Cuba and is an attempt to establish Martí, in the eyes of his audience, as the authoritative leader of the struggle for the independence of Cuba from oppressive Spanish colonial control. Also demonstrated is how Martí fulfills the ethical, pathetic and logical arguments of persuasive discourse as found in James L. Kinneavy’s A Theory of Discourse.
