CONTEXTUAL EFFECTS ON FINE ORIENTATION DISCRIMINATION TASKS

Saylor, Stephanie A.

Abstract Details

2003, Master of Arts, Miami University, Psychology.
Two experiments were designed to examine the influence of context on fine orientation discrimination performance. In Experiment 1, judgments about a center grating were impaired in the presence of vertical sinusoidally-modulated surrounds containing the same spatial frequency (SF) and contrast as the center. When center and surround were out-of-phase, separated by a gap of mean luminance, or unmatched in SF, performance remained at control levels. In Experiment 2, center and surround were abutting and contained the same SF, but differed in mean luminance in an effort to create the perception of two objects. When center and surround were mismatched in luminance (i.e. mean luminance was high in the center and low in the surround, or vise versa) suppression was reduced or eliminated and performance was equivalent to luminance mismatched control conditions. We speculate that lateral interactions in fine orientation discrimination tasks do not occur between objects that are perceptually distinct.
