Incidental lexical acquisition and the modification of glosses in intermediate Spanish

Noe, Kelly Dawn

Abstract Details

2004, Master of Arts, Miami University, Spanish.
This study of incidental lexical acquisition is to determine what nature of marginal gloss (English translation, definition in Spanish or contextual sentence in target language) is the most conducive to word retention in the foreign language classroom of university intermediate-level Spanish learners. The duration of the study is eight weeks. The study consists of the following instruments: a pre-test in the target language (vocabulary checklist, spelling test, and reading comprehension), a reading excerpt with comprehension questions, and two post-tests. The results of this study indicate that there were no statistical differences in the retention of lexicon according to the type of gloss utilized by the student. However, the conclusions obtained in this study may offer pedagogical implications for foreign language classrooms and vocabulary retention rate in intermediate levels of proficiency in the future.
