Abstract
Phytoremediation is the use of plants and their associated microorganisms to remove pollutants from the environment or to render them harmless. The increased use of phytoremediation is being driven by the high cost of alternative methods, as well as the desire to use an environmentally friendly, sustainable process. This thesis examined two different aspects of phytoremediation; determinants of bacterial diversity in contaminated soils and additions of soil amendments in an effort to increase root growth. The bacterial study showed species richness declined principally with soil moisture. These results are consistent with the spatial heterogeneity hypothesis, that the negative richness-moisture relation is the result of competitive exclusion due to increased bacterial and resource mobility in soils with high moisture content. The root study was unable to confirm the hypothesis that the presence of iron in the soil leads to a proliferation in root development.
