The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the origin of magical realism and compare and contrast Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo, Elena Garro’s Los recuerdos del porvenir and Rosario Castellanos’s Oficio de tinieblas according to the characteristics of this style of literature as outlined in the introduction. After offering literary context, it will be shown that these Mexican works use the characteristics of magical realism as a form of social critique of Mexican society.
