My Overcoat: A Collection of Poems

Stockdale, Jennifer Ann

Abstract Details

2007, Master of Arts, Miami University, English: Creative Writing.
My poetic practice investigates the body and its intersection with the absurd or grotesque; it relies on humor, absurdity, and playfulness in tone, voice, and subject matter to develop an exploratory critique of social conventions. I conceive of my work as a means of “seizing,” as Helene Cixous writes in The Laugh of the Medusa, “bodily territory,” as well as “the occasion to speak” with a child-like sense of wonder and a sharp wit, expressed through language play and sometimes warped, surreal images or narratives. This collection contains poems that engage with the human condition and investigate the strangeness of the mundane through the creation of darkly comic characters, scenes, or situations, and explorations of/with the body which produce a number of effects in the speaker, ranging from love to disgust, intrigue to loathing. These poems are imbued with silliness and joyful energy.
