This paper details work experience with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Floodplain Management Program in Columbus, Ohio from June 2006 through December 2006. During the six-month internship, I provided assistance to communities in fulfilling their responsibilities as members of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). My responsibilities consisted of visiting communities to assess their compliance with the NFIP and performing reviews of floodplain development regulations to ensure they meet the minimum standards set in the Code of Federal Regulations. I performed quality control reviews of preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps. The reviews identified areas of concern that may hinder the ability of local officials to enforce their floodplain development regulations. I also worked with communities after a flooding disaster to educate them on completing damage assessments on affected structures.
