IMPROVING SPANISH FOREIGN LANGUAGE LISTENING COMPREHENSION: AIDED BY PRONUNCIATION OR LISTENING PRACTICE?

Kaple, Emily J.

Abstract Details

2007, Master of Arts, Miami University, Spanish.
The present experiment investigates two factors influencing Spanish foreign language listening comprehension: listening practice and pronunciation practice. The primary aim of this study was to find out whether listening practice or pronunciation practice lead to improved listening comprehension in university-level students enrolled in Spanish. Forty-eight third-semester (SPN 201) students in three classes participated in this study, which took place over the course of one textbook chapter (nine days). One class received treatment in listening practice, one group received treatment in pronunciation practice and one group served as the control group. Results did not show a significant improvement in listening comprehension for any of the three classes. Included in this project is a discussion of the results, possible explanations, and pedagogical implications of the current investigation.
