Boozing Spirits: The Effects of Perceived Parenting on Alcohol Use and Spiritual Expression

Abstract Details

2008, Master of Science in Exercise and Health Studies, Miami University, Physical Education, Health, and Sport Studies.
The purpose of the present study is to examine the relationships between perceived parenting, spiritual expression, and alcohol situational confidence among high school seniors and first year college students using a Transtheoretical Model (TTM) framework. Participants (n = 712) were recruited from mid-sized public high schools and universities in the Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States. First, a perceived parenting measure was developed using factor analytic methods. Second, relationships between perceived parenting, spiritual expression situational confidence (SESC), and alcohol situational confidence (ASC) were tested via a series of structural equation models. Results indicated significant predictive relationships between perceived parenting, SESC, and ASC, including support for SESC as a mediator in the relationship between perceived parenting and ASC. Significant differences between high school and college students are also discussed, and implications of the current findings, limitations, and suggestions are presented to provide directions for future research.
