Abstract
According to John Shelton Reed (1986), "Hillbillies appear to be the last acceptable ethnic fools." This project investigated the stereotypes and stigmatization surrounding Appalachian women, explored how women are able to acquire a positive identity in spite of this negative view of Appalachians, and then finally attempted to work to reduce these stereotypes. Study 1 ascertained the current perception of Appalachian women in comparison to Southern women and Low Socioeconomic Status women. Study 2 investigated how perceptions of Appalachian women differ from the "average" woman on dimensions of dynamic gender stereotypes. Appalachian women were interviewed about their experiences with stereotypes, stigma and developing a positive identity in Study 3. Study 4 was interested in working with both Appalachian and non-Appalachian women in reducing the stereotypes associated with Appalachian women. Overall, this project demonstrated that Appalachian women are viewed differently in society than are other women especially on dimensions related to caretaking and masculinity. Furthermore, this perception has very real implications for Appalachian women in terms of how they develop a positive identity, as well as their experiences with discrimination in society. Finally, a cohort effect was found, with differences in identification for younger and older Appalachian women.
