Rescue Archaeology

Starr, Talcott Copeland

Abstract Details

2008, Master of Arts, Miami University, English.
This manuscript combines aspects of poetry and comics in order to create a cohesive multi-genre memoir. Each poem stands on its own as a representation of a moment in time, while also connecting to, and interacting with, the other poems in the collection. Rather than presenting these moments as static snapshots, the poems spread out from their point of origin and associatively weave together small details and scenes. The comic stories, dispersed among the poems, follow a similar principle from a more straightforward, narrative, standpoint. These stories serve to complement and ground the stray moments found in the poetry. The poems and comics are further connected by a shared consideration of the nature of memory and the idea of memory as a creative construction. The links between these elements and their ordering reflect the nature of memory by creating a coherent autobiographical narrative from the seemingly minor details of individual moments.
