Abstract
This thesis is an attempt to explain the exceptionally positive reception of two of Javier Marías’s novels,
Corazón tan blanco
and
Mañana en la batalla piensa en mí
, have been given in Germany. First, it presents an analysis of the German reader’s literary preferences and from there goes on to show how the two works in question coincide to a great extent with those preferences. The thesis then suggests that the German reader, due to certain events in Germany’s recent history, can relate particularly well to the topics presented in the novels. Finally, it suggests that a great deal of the success the two novels have enjoyed is due to the show
The literary quartet
in which the very well known literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki praises the author for what he considers outstanding contributions to contemporary literature.
