Repeated reading (RR) is a well established reading intervention to increase fluency. However, few studies have examined if repeated reading is more effective than having students read an equal amount of non-repetitive text (i.e., sequential reading). This study compared the effects of repeated reading and sequential reading (SR) on fluency and net word acquisition using an alternating treatment design. The effects of the instructional strategies were evaluated in terms of 24-hour retention of fluency and net word acquisition at the individual (child) level and at the aggregate (group) level. Results indicate that repeated reading led to greater fluency gains at retention for both the individual and aggregate levels. Results also indicate, at the individual level repeated reading produced the greatest effects in net word acquisition at retention. However, this finding was inconsistent across all students. At the aggregate level, repeated reading produced slightly higher effects in net word acquisition at retention.
