MAGNETIC RESONANCE IN THE PROXIMITY OF AN INSTABILITY: PERPENDICULAR RESONANCE IN PERMALLOY NEAR THE CRITICAL FIELD

The linear relationship between resonant frequency as a function of applied magneticfield was investigated using a FMR experimental technique for the field perpendicular to a Permalloy thin film. Measurements were taken near a critical point (Happlied=4πM), which occurs at low frequencies in the frequency versus field curve. In order to do this, a special apparatus had to be designed and constructed so that the film could be precisely oriented. The design and operation of this apparatus can provide angular adjustments on two axes to within 0.01°. It was also necessary to design and make a waveguide that operated between 8.0 GHz and 1.6 GHz. It was found that the high field resonance peak followed a linear dispersion while the low field resonant peak followed a nonlinear dispersion that appeared to result from local areas of the sample not being perpendicularly aligned.
