Preliminary Assessment of Recreational Water Quality of Three Preferred Day-Tour Destinations on the Island of Dominica

This study examined bacterial and selected physical parameters at three popular natural swimming areas on the Island of Dominica from May 25th to June 28th 2008. The objectives of this study were to describe how the following bacterial levels of, total coliform, fecal coliform, fecal streptococci and E.coli, vary between a cruise ship day and a non-cruise ship day at each of the three recreational sites. Potential health effects associated with measured levels of bacteria are examined and compared to standards reported by the USEPA, WHO, and the EU. Finally, the bacterial levels measured from recreational sites are evaluated to see if they are likely to be associated with gastroenteritis outbreaks. The results indicated that there is concern about exceeding exposure limits associated with swimming at two of the recreational sites. Tests conducted found that both Emerald Pool and Trafalgar Falls exceeded USEPA regulatory limits during the sampling period.
