El enigma de Medem: Espacio, género y desdoblamiento en Vacas

Romero-González, Tanya

Abstract Details

2009, Master of Arts, Miami University, Spanish.
The present study examines and interprets Julio Medem’s film Vacas (1992), his first contribution to the Spanish cinematographic scene as a filmmaker. In this film Medem conveys a message imbricated in a filmic text pregnant in visual and artistic beauty as well as deep meaning. In order to elucidate the enigma posed by Vacas, I will conduct my analysis following a narrative thread revolving around three topics. Firstly, I will explore the dialectics of space established in the film by reviewing the diverse forms in which nature and its surroundings are exploited as audiovisual symbols. Secondly, I will expose the subversion of gender roles and des(cons)truction of identity that Medem weaves into the film. Finally, I will expand Medem’s challenging of the limits of the self by investigating his inclusion of doppelgängers in addition to the specular quality of his characters.
