Abstract Details

2011, Master of Environmental Science, Miami University, Environmental Sciences.
The National Sea Grant College Program Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship provides selected graduate students with marine policy experience in both the Legislative and Executive branches of government. Finalists are placed in a host office in the Washington,D.C. region for the duration of the one-year fellowship. While the fellowship primarily places fellows in NOAA headquarters, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, other governmental agencies, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Departmentof the Interior, can request fellows. During 2010 I worked within NOAA's Coral Reef Watch (CRW) program. CRW utilizes remotely sensed data from a variety of satellite platforms to monitor oceanic conditions that influence the health of coral reefs throughout the world. As a liaison between NOAA's National Environmental Satellite and Data Information Service (NESDIS) and the Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) I coordinated the preliminary development of a Land Based Sources of Pollution (LBSP)remote sensing product. Secondary fellow responsibilities included editing a Technical Report for a workshop held in Lamington, Australia, coordinating the drafting and publishing of a special issue in the journal Oceanography on the current status of coral reef remote sensing, drafting international agreements on collaborative remote sensing of coral reefs, and assisting in a number of other projects, such as assisting the National Coral Reef Monitoring Plan Working Group and assisting in the coordination of a Reef Resilience and Climate Change workshop in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition to my duties, I had the chance to pursue professional development opportunities such as conferences, workshops, and Coastal Services Center courses. Throughout this experience I have been fortunate enough to be exposed to virtually every level of coral reef conservation from workshops highlighting our ecological understanding of coral reefs to multi-agency U.S. Coral Reef Task Force meetings in Washington D.C.
